The Corpus Christi Public Libraries Centennial

The Corpus Christi Public Libraries Centennial was a multi-month event, spanning from our Centennial Celebration on October 4 to December 13. Each of the libraries hosted 26 events in total, running the gamut from children's author appearances, cultural activities, historic ceremonies, film festivals, exhibit dedications and more. All of these events were well attended and well received, with some attracting hundreds of patrons. Once complete, this centennial section will remain on the library web site as a permanent exhibit.

Laura W. Bush opened our centennial celebration on October 4, 2009 at La Retama Central Library. It isn't the first time that this famous librarian has inaugurated a milestone in our library's history. While Mrs. Bush addressed adults in the atrium with Blucher Park as her foreground, a group of children awaited her arrival in the Mary and Jeff Bell Children's Library. These twenty-seven children were selected by administrators from all Corpus Christi school districts to listen to Mrs. Bush read the book she co-authored with her daughter, Jenna. Each child received a signed copy of Read All About It as a memento of their time with the former first lady of the United States and of Texas.
